FAQ

How to Choose the Right E-Waste Recycling Equipment for Your Plant

Two plant managers in the same year decide to invest in e-waste recycling. One buys on price alone. The other buys on process. Five years later, one is replacing worn-out blades and fighting compliance fines. The other is expanding into a second production line. The difference was not luck. It was the checklist they used before signing the contract.

Start With the Material, Not the Machine

E-waste is not a single category. A shredder built for refrigerator shells will struggle with lithium battery packs. A granulator tuned for copper cable may destroy the precious metals inside a printed circuit board. Before you evaluate any recycling equipment, define your feedstock. Will you process used lead acid batteries, scrap cables, waste circuit boards, or a mixed stream? Each material demands a different mechanical approach, safety enclosure, and downstream separation technology. San Lan Technologies designs plant-level solutions around the material, not the other way around.

Inspect the Core Components Like an Engineer

High-quality recycling machinery starts with high-quality steel. For shredders and pre-choppers, ask for the blade steel grade. Grades such as SKD-11 or Cr12MoV, forged and vacuum-quenched to HRC 56-62, indicate a supplier who understands wear resistance. The cutting shaft should be forged from high-strength alloy steel, and the machine body should use thickened plate with reinforced stress points. Weak welds and soft blades are expensive to fix once the line is running.

For lead acid battery recycling equipment, the breaking and separation system must handle sulfuric acid residue without corroding. For cable recycling equipment, the granulator screen and airflow separator must be precisely balanced to prevent copper loss in the plastic stream. Ask the supplier for the tolerance range of key components and whether they allow on-site material testing before purchase.

Demand Environmental Compliance as Standard

Recycling is an environmental business. If your equipment creates dust, acid mist, or heavy-metal runoff, you are moving pollution from one place to another. A complete plant must include air pollution control, water treatment, and sealed conveyance. Lead acid battery recycling, for example, generates acidic wastewater and lead paste dust. Without a closed-loop water treatment plant and bag-house filtration, the operation will face shutdowns long before it reaches profitability.

Key question: Does the supplier provide the entire environmental system, or only the mechanical line? A reputable manufacturer delivers both.

Look for EPC Capability, Not Just a Catalog

Buying a machine is easy. Integrating it into a working plant is hard. Engineering, procurement, and construction (EPC) experience matters because recycling lines involve multiple unit operations: shredding, grinding, separation, smelting, and effluent treatment. Each stage must match the capacity and particle size of the next. A supplier with 15 years of EPC project experience can customize layout, power distribution, and material flow for your workshop space and local regulations. They can also help you source feedstock and find buyers for your recovered copper, lead ingots, or black mass.

Check the Track Record Beyond the Brochure

A supplier with installations in 21 countries has already solved the problems you have not yet encountered: tropical humidity, voltage fluctuation, customs documentation, and operator training in multiple languages. Ask for references in regions similar to yours. Ask whether the supplier sends technicians for installation and commissioning. Ask how quickly spare parts can reach your warehouse. Long-term service is often worth more than a five percent discount on the initial invoice.

Match the Technology to the Output You Need

Different end products require different process routes. If you need copper powder from printed circuit boards, a dry air separator may reach 96-98% purity, while a wet separator can handle boards with electronic components still attached. If you are recovering lead from used batteries, a rotary furnace offers higher recovery rates than a traditional blast furnace, but the choice depends on your daily throughput and energy source. A supplier with a broad catalog—circuit board recycling equipment, battery breaking systems, cable granulators, and lithium ore extraction plants—can recommend the right combination instead of forcing a single standard model.

The Final Checklist Before You Order

Use this five-point list to protect your investment:

  • Confirm the steel grades, hardness values, and welding standards of all wear parts.
  • Require a complete environmental package: dust collection, gas scrubbing, and water treatment.
  • Verify that the supplier offers installation, commissioning, and operator training.
  • Ask for reference sites in your region or climate zone.
  • Request a material test with your actual feedstock before final payment.
